Colorado Springs, CO

The Quad Innovation Partnership is a consortium of all four colleges and universities in Colorado Springs, whose mission is to elevate, educate, and create new innovators in the Colorado Springs community. The basement space at 408 S. Nevada (Loyal Coffee) is used for workspace, community and networking events, demonstrations, and temporary retail events to foster creative growth and partnerships between students, graduates, and the business community.

HB&A designed the space to be open and flexible to adapt to these many uses. Because the Quad space is a basement with no natural daylighting, the team prioritized the design of lighting and acoustics, as well as the application of bright colors and soft finishes, to ensure the success of the project on a very limited budget. The concrete ribbed ceiling and columns and several brick walls were left exposed, with acoustic panels recessed between the ribs and along the upper walls to reduce reverberation. A suspended ceiling grid with perforated panels provides some definition of the space while softening the light produced by bright white industrial LED lamps. HB&A produced several interior renderings to confirm design direction and assist the program director’s efforts to achieve buy-in by the university administrators.
