Project Info:
Pueblo Fire Station 9 was designed by HB&A with collaborative input from a committed team of firefighters within the Pueblo Fire Department. Multiple sites were investigated and several elevations were studied in SketchUp so that three dimensional views of the full station were available for comments and input by the design team.
Fire Station 9 has a craftsman character with a brick base and stucco finish on wood framing. Gable roof forms define various programmatic spaces within the building and supporting accent brackets add color and scale to the elevations at key locations. A raised clerestory at the main public entrance and at the apparatus bays allows light to penetrate deep into the station. Shade and protection from the elements are provided by a trellis at the exterior patio and a deep roof overhang along the western elevation where the bunk rooms are.
The floorplan refinements were centered around separating the "dirty" side of the fire station – apparatus, shop, storage, and decontamination from the "clean" side of the station – the residential and public face of the building. Two main cooridors will provide quick access to the fire trucks from anywhere in the station to allow for a rapid exit. Durable finishes were selected including ceramic tile, inset walkoff mats, interlocking rubber tiles, and stain resistive carpeting. Corner guards, reinforced gypsum board, and concrete block provide toughened wall protection. Larger spaces in the station include a kitchen, day room, and fitness room; all sized appropriately to accommodate the needs of the Pueblo Fire Department.
