Architectural Portfolio • Buckley Chapel

Project Info:

This multi-denominational chapel not only provides for worship, weddings, and memorial services, but is an integral part of the base activities with education, base meetings, and counseling taking place on an almost daily basis. These key events for the wing population require a building that is easily accessible, accommodates all faiths, and visually reads as a place of worship.

The voluminous, light filled sanctuary, with its sloping floor and visual connection to the landscape, offers ample space for services. Visible from on base and off, the Sanctuary, with its dramatic curved roof, is an anchoring element of the whole complex. Large fiberglass panels with subdued coloring fill the space with diffused light and the arched structure above focuses the congregation on the chancel area in front. Overhead perforated wood panels and floating cloud forms provide acoustical enhancements and give an ethereal effect to the nave. The overall experience is uplifting and dynamic while supplying excellent audiovisual control.
